About Allen

I've been a train nut since I was about 5 years old, when Santa gave me an American Flyer trainset. The die was cast and it was all down hill from there - I was hooked on trains. I took a break as a teenager but got back into the hobby as an adult with a visit to a hobby shop where I found a stockcar kit that I just had to have.

I've been producing train videos since 1982 when I went to work for Model Railroader magazine. At Kalmbach I did a total of 13 programs: both how-tos, and layout tours. When Kalmbach got out of the video business I went to work for Hopewell Productions where Rich Melvin and I produced 10 prototype train videos.

This was also where the Great Model Railroad Series got started! (As an aside, Rich is one of the engineers on the Nickel Plate Berkshire No. 765). Before I got into producing model railroad videos full time, I worked in television production for 11 years both behind the camera and in front of it at a couple different TV stations. It was those years of experience that taught me how to produce a good, professional and informative video. Now I specialize in producing model railroad videos with the Great Model Railroads video series.

I'm also building a layout in my basement based on the Memphis area in 1950. It's known as the Bluff City Southern. Because we've moved around the country a little, this is the fourth version of the BCS, but I have no plans to ever move this layout again!
